Dakota Sunset Resort Report AND Sauger Migration on Lake Pepin
A big welcome back to Sean Timmens. Sean and his wife Linda own the Dakota Sunset Resort in Minnewaukan, ND on Devil’s Lake. Sean will be filling us in on how the hunt is for waterfowl and pheasant and we will of course, talk a little about the fishing this fall.
“The resort sits on beautiful West Bay on Devils Lake near Minnewaukan, North Dakota. We are six hours from Minneapolis, under three hours from Fargo, and ten hours from Madison, WI. Fishing opportunities abound! The Minnewaukan boat landing is less than 15 minutes from your cabin. Grahams Island landing is just ten minutes to the southeast. The Six Mile boat launch is only eight minutes away. The landing for Pelican Lake is literally straight across the road to the north. Having all of these launches close ensures that even on the windiest days you can get out on the water.
Winter access onto Devils Lake is right at the resort. You can drive on directly from your cabin. We are 13 miles to the west of the city of Devils Lake. There you will find the bigger conveniences of grocery, sporting goods, big box stores if needed. Spirit Lake Casino is just 24 minutes away.”
Our second guest is Capt. Dan McGuire. Dan is a licensed Captain and is a fishing guide with ‘Pool 4 Mississippi River Walleyes‘ . Dan is going to talk about the Sauger migration on the Mississippi River in Lake Pepin, up to pools 3 & 4. We will talk about what presentations to use and how the Saugers are moving.
‘Dan began his pursuit of Mississippi River walleyes while in college. Growing up in southwestern Minnesota, Dan spent his early years catching multiple species in the small pot-hole lakes near his hometown. Once he got the chance to chase walleyes on the moving water of the Mississippi, he was addicted! He spends every chance he gets, honing his river fishing skills and learning the seasonal movements/patterns of Mississippi River walleyes. Dan has also spent the last 30 years as a tournament angler. He has competed, and still competes, in a variety of local, regional, and national
level tournaments all across the midwest. Through his tournament competition, he has gained a wealth of knowledge on a variety of complex bodies of water – rivers; flowages;
reservoirs; and natural lakes (large and small). Many of the tournaments Dan competed in took him to the waters of Green Bay. Green Bay, and all of the bays and tributaries that make up this great system, soon became one of his favorite fisheries. Chasing big walleyes, especially big Green Bay and Mississippi River walleyes is Dan’s passion! Besides being an avid walleye fisherman, Dan had a successful career as an educator. His teaching skills are an important part of all of Dan’s guide trips, as he not only wants to help you catch more fish, but he wants to help you become a better angler. A day on the water with Dan is a great opportunity to share his knowledge, experience, and passion for hunting big walleyes.’
